Commuter fines bring in $16.5m

November 4, 2009 - 12:02AM

THE number of people fined on Melbourne's public transport system increased 9.9 per cent in the past financial year.

The Department of Transport fined just under 200,000 people in the year to July, up 18,000 on the previous year. The fines brought Government revenue of $16.46 million, up from $14.95 million.

''Public transport patronage grew by more than 40 million trips in 2008-09 and this reflects the 9.9 per cent variation,'' department spokesman Chris Veraa said.

Yarra Trams and Connex were paid $1.81 million, up from $1.76 million, to cover the costs of handing out the fines.

■ Trials of the $1.35 billion myki smartcard begin today, with 1000 public servants using the tickets. The staff will pay for tickets, to help in final trials of myki in Melbourne.

the mikiverse loves free speech and wholeheartedley accepts, that someone who is diametrically opposed to my views is free to promulgate those thoughts...However, misogyny, racism, intolerance etc will see that comment deleted.
These abstract considerations will be solely, and exclusively determined by the mikiverse, so play hard, but, nice.
